1956 Wolfsburg Factory Production “Samba” Volkswagen 23-Window Microbus
North American export model production -produced in Febuary, 1956
Total factory sunroof microbus production for North American export was approximately 300-400 units in 1956.
Installed factory VW options on this bus:
-Factory installed accessory retractable “ambulance “ step under forward side cargo door
-Electric forced air fan system “ambulance fans”
-Ebrspacher accessory 6 volt stationary heater system ( restored and fully operational with all
system components period correct to the bus)
This VW bus was imported through Riveara Motors in Portland, OR and sold through one of the first VW dealerships in the Pacific North West, Five Star Motors in Coos Bay, Oregon in 1965. The bus remained in Coos Bay until the mid-1960’s.
*Brought to Centralia, Washington in the early 1970’s and sold there to the second owner.
* Owned by same 2nd owner from about 1971-1995.
The Bus was stored indoors after 1995 until 2004 when restoration began
The vehicle was restored using 95% original NOS or good used VW factory components.
The bus was completely dissembled all metal body components were stripped and blasted where necessary remove all rust, sealed, primed and repainted in correct factory colors. All rust damage was meticulously repaired with NOS or the best available used VW parts to original factory standards. After full body metal restoration, The bus was finished with Concept DCC single stage paint in the correct factory colors.
All mechanical components were dissembled stripped and refinished or power coated in factory colors . The bus features the original front suspension rebuilt with all NOS including parts king pins , Torsion arm bushings etc. The split case transaxle is original to the bus and was rebuilt by Gary Zinc in Seattle with all NOS parts
The 1200 cc engine was rebuilt with all NOS period correct or good used parts and features an unnumbered factory replacement 36 hp case. The heads were mildly ported and polished to give the bus better engine performance and cooling . A late1950’s Porsche 356 tower oil cooler was substituted for the factory cooler for improved engine cooling performance (this modification is not visible without engine disasembly)
All engine mechanical components are original 1956′ VW and correct to the bus including air cleaner, starter, generator, carburetor, sheet tin, fan pulleys, mechanical Bosch distributor , gas tank, and starting crank
The exhaust system is NOS VW and features an VW logo factory muffler . The car has the original 6 Volt electrical system which is absolutely correct in every detail with all components and connections cleaned and restored.
The interior was restored by one of the top north American VW upholstery shops, West Coast Classics in Orange County , California and features exact reproduction German made materials in the correct colors for the year and model of this vehicle . The headliner is the correct German Wool material. All three seat frames were dissembled , powder coated to the correct black color and are original to the bus including the hard to find pre-1957 Wolfsgurg 6 leg center seat . The bus has all correct original 1950’s VW “snowflake” kick panels and correct original VW rubber floor mats and original VW rubber bulk head kick mat.
All exterior trim is original VW including a full set restored anodized aluminum wheel beauty rings , rare Wolfsburg type bumper trim etc . Both Bumpers and aluminum bumper trim is NOS VW.
All electrical components including tail lights head lamps and lenses are correct 1955-56 VW parts and not reproductions . all locks including correct ignition switch are NOS or restored triple plate re chromed parts and rekeyd to one key blank
All window glass is correct 1956 Wolfsburg production glass with correct logos on the glass. All Door weather stripping Is NOS VW no reproduction materials were used . The wiper blades are correct VW NOS. Most window glass weather stripping including skylights is NOS VW.
Tires are correct size glass belted 15” tires as came from the factory supplied by Cooker Tire.
The bus includes the original owners manual, Original VW dealer service manual , original dealer factory parts list book updated to 1958. also original 1956 sales brochure and Ebrspacher heater service manual and parts list.
The bus has been driven approximately 3,000 miles since being restored. And has been garage kept since restoration.
